Verona – the enchanting city of Romeo & Juliet

One of the most beautiful cities in Italy, stylish and romantic Verona is renowned for its artistic heritage, stunning architecture and Shakespearean associations. Although Shakespeare never actually visited Verona, he was so fascinated by its reputation that he set his famous play “Romeo and Juliet” in Verona, thus inextricably linking the city with the tragic love story.
Verona’s history dates to Roman times when it was an important Roman settlement. From 1405 AD Verona fell under the rule of the Republic of Venice, when the city lost its independence but gained almost four hundred years of peace and prosperity, thus becoming a significant medieval centre.
Best explored on foot, Verona’s network of small streets and alleys provide enticing walks. Enjoy a break from sightseeing with a coffee and fresh pastry in the many “bar” /cafés, or sip an aperitvo or a glass of quality wine – Verona borders with the Valpolicella wine area famous for its Valpolicella and Amarone wines.
Verona’s vast cultural heritage is evident in the city’s landmarks such as the Roman Amphitheatre (Arena di Verona) which hosts the internationally acclaimed Verona Opera festival during the summer, attracting opera enthusiasts from around the globe.

The centre of Verona is traffic-free and it is best explored on foot. There will be free to time to explore the city independently, and there will be a guided walking tour of Verona’s highlights.
