History and culture

Italy has been a hub of civilization for thousands of years and as such it has a rich and diverse chequered history.

The country was home to the Roman Empire, one of the most powerful, longstanding and influential civilizations in the world. During its peak expansion point in the early 2nd century A.D. the Roman Empire controlled most European countries and territories, as well as parts of northern Africa and the middle-east.

The timeline of Italy’s rich history is evident in its many iconic landmarks such as the world famous Coliseum and Roman Forum in Rome, the leaning tower of Pisa and the canals and medieval architecture of Venice – just to name a few.

Italy has also been a centre of the Renaissance movement, which saw the emergence of some of the world’s greatest artists, architects, and philosophers, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Dante Alighieri. Visitors can explore Italy’s many historic cities, including the three internationally renowned citta d’ arte or “art cities” Venice, Florence and Rome, which offer a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage combined with modern and vibrant lifestyle.

Many of these renowned landmarks are protected U.N. World Heritage sites as remnants of civilizations that have left an indelible mark on the country’s culture and history.

One of the countries highlights is the regional diversity: Italy’s history includes the unification of the country, which took place in the 19th century. Prior to unification, Italy was divided into numerous independent states and territories, each with its own language, culture, and government. In 1861, these states were united into a single country under the rule of King Victor Emmanuel II. The country is now divided into 20 regions and the astonishing regional differences, diverse lifestyle and culture make Italy the perfect holiday experience.
